Established in 1947, PRSA has been significantly shaped by the contributions of pioneering women who have advanced the field of public relations. Notably, Betsy Plank stands out as a trailblazer among the organization's founders.
Betsy Plank: A Trailblazer in Public Relations
Betsy Plank's career is marked by a series of groundbreaking achievements:
· First Female President of PRSA (1973): Plank shattered gender barriers by becoming the first woman to lead the Public Relations Society of America.
· Co-Founder of PRSSA (1967): Recognizing the need to cultivate young talent, she co-founded the Public Relations Student Society of America, providing students with opportunities to engage with the profession.
· Department Head at Illinois Bell (1974): In a historic move, Plank became the first woman to head a department at Illinois Bell Telephone Company, overseeing a 102-person team in external affairs.
· Recipient of PRSA's Top Honors: She was the inaugural individual to receive three of PRSA's highest accolades, including the Gold Anvil Award in 1977.
Plank's legacy continues through the Plank Center for Leadership in Public Relations at the University of Alabama, dedicated to fostering leadership and ethical practices in the field.

She is overseeing the 60th anniversary of PRSA-IE and helping to grow the chapter’s membership and engagement.
- Stephanie Graham, APR: Serving as Chapter President in 2024, Graham's leadership was pivotal in the chapter's recognition with the First Place National DEI Award, underscoring a strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
- Monique Carter, MPA: As President in 2023, Carter's tenure contributed to the chapter's growth and prominence in the public relations community.
- Marisa Kutansky: Serving as President in 2022, Kutansky's leadership continued the chapter's tradition of excellence and community engagement.
- Charee Gillins: As President in 2021, Gillins played a crucial role in advancing the chapter's mission and expanding its influence.

- Dr. Mary Ann Pearson, APR: Dr. Peason is a longtime fixture within PRSA-IE and served as President in 2015 and also serves on PRSA’s Western District Board. She also oversees the APR program for the chapter helping to usher in a new generation of PR professionals accredited in public relations.
