From Your President: Summer Fr(IE)days and Professional Growth

I'm thoroughly enjoying my Summer Fridays—how about you? These extra hours off from work during the summer months (half days on Friday) have been a great opportunity to run errands, shop, catch up on household duties, or indulge in hobbies. Sometimes, I even use the time to do work for the Chapter, like writing this column!
Summer Fridays offer workers the chance to take a few hours or an entire day off to unwind and recharge. You may have read that some companies are dropping this practice. Whether or not you have the luxury of Summer Fridays, I hope your schedule is flexible enough to allow you to take advantage of Chapter events and/or PRSA National's learning opportunities.
Last week, the Chapter presented an excellent webinar on storytelling from our colleagues at IEHP. Their insights and tips were invaluable. If you're looking for more advice and information about storytelling, be sure to check out these PRSA webinars: On July 11, there’s “6 Ways to Reach More Readers,” and on August 15, “Maximizing the Potential of Story.” Both are free for members and offer tremendous value. Additionally, don’t forget about PRSA's Storytelling Certificate Program. All are great benefits of our organization!
Summer is also an ideal time to review your schedule and sign up for ICON, PRSA's national conference, happening Oct. 15–17 in Anaheim. The convenient location makes it easier for Inland Empire residents to attend. If you're NOT a PRSA member, and you register for the conference, PRSA membership is included! (Be sure to add the $65 Inland Empire membership during sign-up.)
Those Summer Fridays might also be the perfect opportunity to pursue the APR (Accreditation in Public Relations). If you have questions or need assistance, contact our APR director. For those with 20+ years of public relations and communication experience, you're likely eligible for the College of Fellows. Learn more about the process, and consider applying in 2025. Look out for the "How to Apply" webinar in January, and read more about it (materials are due May 1).
Enjoy the rest of your summer, take advantage of PRSA's many offerings, and I hope you continue to grow both personally and professionally.
