From Your President: Celebrations, Connections and Care

Woot woot! A hearty congratulations to our Inland Empire graduates, particularly our communications, PR and marketing majors—the future of our profession. Thank you for your hard work and perseverance and for the unique perspectives and innovation you will bring to your employers. We’re so pleased to partner with PRSSA chapters at California Baptist University and Cal State San Bernardino and with communications students at Riverside Community College and Cal Poly Pomona. The PRSA-IE Board is committed to working with students on their development; we have a robust Jobs web page, and we offer grants for our professional development events (simply email us at [email protected] before an event, and we can provide a voucher for a free student registration). And, we’re looking forward to providing two $1,000 scholarships to undergrad and grad students pursuing a career in PR/communications; Find scholarship criteria and instructions here.

Students and professionals will find the Chapter’s mixers a great way to make invaluable connections. At the recent event in Riverside, an array of industries were represented (nonprofit, agency, utilities, etc.), contributing to rich conversations and a diversity of advice that is hard to come by in any other setting. There was also plenty of networking going on in Palm Springs at the Agua Caliente event, where we learned about tribal-community relations, enjoyed a delicious lunch and were treated to spectacular tours of the museum (ooh!) and spa (ahhh!). We are planning a mixer this summer in the Temecula area, so stay tuned for details. The Board has pledged to reach as many members in our region as possible.

It’s a great time to think about fall—specifically October 15–17—when PRSA's national conference, ICON, comes to Anaheim. Our Chapter is very involved in the planning as our Director at Large Chris Perez (Westbound Communications) is serving as ICON Host Committee Co-chair; Programming VP Jessica Newton and I are also committee members. We’re working with fellow chapters in Los Angeles and Orange County to bring you an incredible conference, and I hope you’ll attend. Receive 10% off the professional ICON full registration before Sept. 6 with code WESTERN24.

I hope you've made plans to recharge and relax with loved ones this summer. Along with professional development and networking, self-care is an essential part of our work lives. Interspersed with a fairly heavy load of summer work projects, I’ve scheduled a few getaways, too. Perhaps a return to the fabulous Spa at Séc-he will be one of them.
