The Public Relations Society of America Inland Empire Chapter (PRSA-IE) honored top area public relations professionals at its annual dinner and Polaris Awards held on Thursday, Oct. 20, at Edwards Mansion in Redlands.

Members of the Strategic Communications Department for the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians were awarded Best in Show for a media event which sought to have Serrano ancestral lands recognized by San Bernardino County. The event leveraged strong cultural storytelling, public official advocacy and a multi-platform approach to implement a public relations strategy. For the first time in Inland Empire history, San Bernardino County officials acknowledged Native American tribal land by announcing at a November 2021 media event that its museums are sited upon the unceded ancestral territory of the Maara’yam (Serrano) people, known today as the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians and Morongo Band of Indians, respectively. The event helped meet the Tribe’s goals of continuing the establishment of sovereignty by raising awareness about their people, history and rights. Regarding this entry, a PRSA judge remarked, “I especially liked how considerate the research tactics were and how the campaign team focused on ensuring the message was told by those who are the face of the story.”

The Polaris Awards represent the best in the industry within the Inland Empire. Entries were judged by the PRSA Utah Chapter who selected the top projects that successfully incorporate sound research, planning, implementation and evaluation. Based on final scoring, an entry may receive a Polaris Award (score of 90 or higher), a Capella Award (score of 75-89 points) or the coveted Best In Show award (highest score of all entries).

Additional winners include Loma Linda University Health, Westbound Communications, California Baptist University, Cucamonga Valley Water District, Animal Friends of the Valley, San Bernardino County Transportation Authority, OPR Communications, Cardenas Market, County of Riverside Executive Office, Eastern Municipal Water District, Elsinore Valley Municipal Water District and Inland Empire Community Foundation. A complete list of winners with links to the projects can be found on the Polaris Award Recipients web page.

Individual awards were presented to PRSA-IE president Marisa Kutansky for her service to the chapter and to PRSA-IE board member Christopher Perez, APR, who received the 2022 Aaron Norris Spirit of PR Award for his “dedication to the PRSA-IE Chapter and the public relations profession.”
