The CBU PRSSA chapter strives to uphold the same values as the university, while students learn from and with each other and prepare for future careers. Meet the 2022–2023 CBU PRSSA co-presidents and PR majors Grace Lomax ’23 (strategic communication emphasis/marketing minor) and Christine Raffanello '22, who are making plans for the new school year.
What is your desired career?
Lomax: "The dream would be to work with nonprofit companies, helping them develop campaigns and get more support for their various causes, or to start my own PR firm centered around nonprofit development."
Raffanello: "Public relations or events coordinator at Madison Square Garden."
How is PRSSA membership influencing your personal and professional development?
Lomax: "My networking, strategic planning and communication skills have significantly increased thanks to PRSSA. Furthermore, it also instills confidence within students, including myself, helping them have a foundational understanding and insight into the real world of public relations."
Raffanello: "By being a PRSSA member, I've created friendships through being on the board with classmates and being introduced to other public relations students at school events. At events and conferences, I have met numerous people in different industries willing to provide advice and stay in touch."
What PRSA or PRSSA activities are you looking forward to this academic year?
Lomax: "I look forward to coordinating and attending events both on our college campus and across the nation virtually. Hearing from and connecting with countless professionals who are each willing to share their time and expertise with students is such a unique and special opportunity."
Raffanello: "As president this upcoming semester, I look forward to creating events and collaborating with board members about visiting speakers or trips that would be insightful and beneficial to students. I'm excited to have someone who works in the sports industry at one of the events."
In what ways can PR/Com practitioners be most supportive of students?
Lomax: "Make themselves available to speak and interact with students openly (even outside of events), answering questions, addressing their concerns and offering tangible advice for their future."
Raffenello: "The best support from practitioners is feedback, whether for school-related assignments or how to act in a professional setting … Certain advice from professors I will remember for a lifetime and am so grateful for."
